Why Am I Being Asked for a Username and Password?

This page covers the password prompt that appears while installing StudioTax.

If you are being asked for a password when opening a return, see Why Is StudioTax Asking for a Password to Open My Return? instead.

This prompt is not coming from StudioTax — it is a security requirement enforced by your operating system to authorize the installation of new software.

Windows

Windows may require you to enter administrator credentials before allowing a new application to be installed. This is a restriction set on your computer, and is not related to StudioTax itself.

Enter the username and password you use to log in to your computer (or ask your system administrator if you do not have admin rights).

Mac

macOS requires you to authorize the installation of any new application by entering your user credentials. This is a built-in security feature of the Mac operating system.

When prompted, enter the same username and password you use to log in to your Mac. Once authorized, the installation will proceed normally.
