Error N1 – Identification Information Does Not Match CRA Records
The N1 error means the CRA could not match the information in your return with what they have on file. There are a few common causes to check:
1. Incorrect Personal Information
The most common cause is a mismatch in your personal information, such as:
- Date of birth — verify it matches exactly what the CRA has on file.
- Social Insurance Number (SIN) — make sure there are no typos.
Double-check these fields in your return and correct any errors before trying to file again.
2. Incorrect NETFILE Access Code
An invalid or mistyped NETFILE Access Code can also trigger this error. See Where Can I Find My NETFILE Access Code? for instructions on locating and entering the correct code.
3. “First Time Filer” Option
In the NETFILE wizard, verify whether you selected the “First Time Filer” option. This option is intended only for newcomers to Canada or individuals who have never filed a Canadian tax return before. If this does not apply to you, make sure that option is unchecked.
4. Contact the CRA
If none of the above applies and your personal information is correct, this is not an issue that can be resolved on the software side. You will need to contact the CRA directly for assistance:
