Line 31600 – Disability amount for self
To claim the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) for yourself, simply tick the checkbox on line 31600 of the T1 General form. StudioTax will automatically calculate the credit and apply it to your return.
Do I Need to Submit Form T2201?
No. Form T2201 (Disability Tax Credit Certificate) is not required to be filed with your tax return and is not included in StudioTax.
You can claim the disability amount on line 31600 only if the CRA already has an approved T2201 on file for you. If your T2201 has been approved by the CRA, tick the Yes checkbox on the T1 General and proceed with your return as usual.
If you have never submitted a T2201, or it has not yet been approved, you cannot claim this credit. The T2201 is filed directly by your medical practitioner with the CRA — your copy of the form should be kept with your personal records and does not need to be sent in with your tax return.
Linked Returns (Spouse)
If you are filing a linked return with your spouse, the transfer of any unused portion of the disability amount is handled through Schedule 2, which is filled out automatically by StudioTax when the spouse claiming the DTC does not need the full amount to reduce their tax to zero.
