Unfortunately, we are unable to retrieve or send your return files. StudioTax is a desktop application, not a cloud-based service. This means all your tax information is saved exclusively on your own computer — no data is ever uploaded to or stored on our servers. We have no access to your personal or tax information under any circumstances.
Where Are My Files?
Your return files are stored locally on your computer. By default, they are saved in your Documents folder, unless you chose a different location when saving. The files use the .xxt extension, where xx corresponds to the tax year:
| File extension | Tax year |
|---|---|
.25t | 2025 |
.24t | 2024 |
.23t | 2023 |
.22t | 2022 |
Try searching your computer for files ending in .25t, .24t, etc. to locate them.
Backup Files
StudioTax automatically creates a backup file alongside each return, using a .backup extension (e.g., .25t.backup). If your main return file is missing or corrupted, you can recover from the backup:
- Locate the
.xxt.backupfile. - Remove the
.backuppart from the filename so it becomes.xxt. - Open it in StudioTax as you normally would.
If the Files Are Gone
If you cannot find either the return file or its backup, and you have no other copy saved elsewhere (such as an external drive or cloud storage), there is unfortunately no way to recover them. We strongly recommend keeping a backup of your return files in a safe location after filing.
