If StudioTax is unable to save your return on Windows, it is usually caused by a permission issue — the software does not have the necessary access to write to the folder you are trying to save in.

1. Try Saving to a Different Folder

Use File → Save As to save your return to a different location, such as your Desktop or a local folder that is not synced to the cloud. Cloud-synced folders (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive) can sometimes restrict write access for desktop applications.

2. Restart StudioTax as Administrator

Running StudioTax with elevated permissions can resolve access issues:

  1. Close StudioTax.
  2. Right-click the StudioTax icon.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Try saving your return again.

3. Check Controlled Folder Access (Windows Security)

Windows includes a security feature called Controlled Folder Access that can block applications from writing to protected folders. If this feature is enabled, you may need to allow StudioTax through it:

Follow Microsoft’s instructions to allow an app through Controlled Folder Access: Allow an app to access controlled folders

4. Save to a USB Drive (Last Resort)

If none of the above steps work, plug in a USB drive and use File → Save As to save your return directly to it. USB drives are typically not subject to the same system restrictions as local or cloud folders.
