There are two separate counters in StudioTax: the creation counter and the filing counter.

License Limit (StudioTax Rule)

One license allows you to file up to 10 returns. The filing counter increments each time a return is successfully transmitted.

Per-Computer Limit (CRA Rule)

On a single computer, you can create up to 20 returns. This limit is set by CRA as part of its Netfile certification requirements and cannot be overridden.

How the Creation Counter Works

The creation counter increments every time you:

  • Press Create a new return and go through the wizard, or
  • Open an existing return and change the SIN.

Spousal linked returns count as 2 returns — the creation counter increments by 2 when a linked return is saved for the first time.

Important: The returns you have already created are counted and cannot be undone. Reinstalling the software or deleting the return files will not reset the counter.

Tip: Do not create multiple returns for what-if scenarios. Instead, make a copy of the saved return file on disk and open the copy to explore different options.

Activating a Second License

If you need to file more than 10 returns, purchase and activate a second license on your existing StudioTax installation — no reinstall required.

  • Activating a new license resets the filing counter to zero, allowing you to file 10 more returns.
  • Do not activate a second license early: wait until the software prompts you, so you use all 10 returns from your first license first.
  • If the creation counter has already reached 20, activating a new license will not allow you to create additional returns. You can still open and file returns that were already created.

Personal Use Only

The Netfile version of StudioTax is intended for personal use only.

  • If you are a professional tax preparer, you must use StudioTax Enterprise instead.
  • You cannot use StudioTax Enterprise unless you are a registered tax preparer (you will need an Efiler number and password).
  • It is illegal to use the regular version of StudioTax to prepare returns for other people and charge fees for that service.
  • According to CRA rules, you are also not allowed to use Netfile software to file another person’s return, even for free or for charity.

If you want to volunteer to help others file their taxes for free, CRA runs a dedicated program for this: Volunteer at a free tax clinic

With StudioTax Enterprise, you can legally prepare returns for others and charge fees for your services. Quebec tax preparers additionally need a Revenue Quebec preparer number and password alongside their CRA Efiler credentials.
