Why Is StudioTax Asking for a Password to Open My Return?

If StudioTax is prompting you for a password when opening a return and you never set one, this is a sign that the return file has become corrupted.

This page covers the password prompt that appears when opening a return in StudioTax.

If you are being asked for a password while installing StudioTax, see Why Am I Being Asked for a Username and Password? instead.

A password prompt you did not set means the file cannot be recovered directly. You will need to restore from a backup.

Restore From a Backup

StudioTax automatically creates backup copies of your returns. Follow the steps in I Can’t Find My Return — Can You Send It to Me? to locate your backup files and restore your return.
