DocumentationFrequently Asked QuestionsWill I Lose My Returns If I Update or Reinstall StudioTax?

No. Updating, uninstalling, or reinstalling StudioTax will not affect your tax return files.

Where Are My Returns Stored?

All your tax information is saved locally on your computer in return files named with the .xxt extension, where xx represents the tax year. For example:

File extensionTax year
.25t2025
.24t2024
.23t2023

These files exist independently of the StudioTax software. Since the software and your return files are stored separately, any changes to the software — whether an update, uninstall, or reinstall — leave your return files completely untouched.

What Should I Be Careful About?

While reinstalling StudioTax is safe, keep in mind that manually deleting or moving your return files will make them unavailable to the software. Make sure you know where your files are saved, and consider keeping a backup copy in a safe location such as an external drive or cloud storage.

If the update wizard is not working, see The Update Is Not Working for steps to reinstall manually.
