T-Slip foreign income — source country not specified

When entering foreign income from a T-slip (such as a T3, T5, or T5008), Studio Tax requires you to specify the source country for that foreign income. If the source country is left blank, you will see an error message preventing you from filing your return.

Why this error occurs

This error is triggered when a T-slip contains an amount in a foreign income field but no country of origin has been selected. The CRA requires this information to properly apply any applicable foreign tax credits and to validate your NETFILE submission.

How to fix it

  1. Open the T-slip that contains the foreign income amount (e.g., T3, T5).
  2. Locate the foreign income field — it is usually accompanied by a country code or source country dropdown.
  3. Select the appropriate country from the list. For most cases this will be United States (USA), but choose whichever country the income originated from.
  4. If you are unsure of the source country, check your original T-slip document — the issuer is required to indicate the country of the foreign income.
  5. Save your changes and re-run the error check. The error should no longer appear.

Additional notes

  • If you have multiple T-slips with foreign income, make sure each one has a source country specified.
  • Foreign income amounts are automatically used to calculate the foreign tax credit on Schedule 1, which may reduce your federal tax owing.
  • If no foreign taxes were withheld, you still need to specify the source country — simply leave the foreign tax paid field at zero.
